FAQ

The questions worth answering up front.

What is Phone × Life?

It puts your phone use beside the parts of life it might be affecting: your sleep, your movement, and the time you commit in your calendar. On the nights your phone stayed up late, did you sleep less? How much of a workout was the phone actually in? On your busiest days, did your attention hold? ThirdLife only reports a difference when it is big enough to trust, and where the data is thin it says nothing rather than guessing.

How long before ThirdLife is useful?

Straight away. ThirdLife reads the past month from Apple's Screen Time and from Apple Health, so on your first day you already have a month of scores, charts and findings to look at, not an empty app waiting to fill up. Phone × Life can compare your heavy phone nights against your quiet ones from the start, because the history for both is already there. What builds from the day you install is your streaks and milestones, which start counting when you do.

Does any of my data leave my phone?

No. Your screen time, your scores and your findings are all worked out on the device and never sent anywhere. There is no account and no server holding your usage. This is not a policy we could quietly change: Apple's Screen Time framework is built so that app names and usage cannot leave your phone in the first place. The only exception is your name and email, if you choose to give them, so we can send a short monthly note on what's new. Nothing about your usage travels with it, and you can unsubscribe at any time.

What do the four rings actually measure?

Phone behaviour, not the life domain itself. Connect scores whether your phone time with people was conversation or passive scrolling. Balance scores the mix of active and passive use. Focus scores whether your attention held or fragmented. Rest scores how quiet your phone was around sleep, measured against your actual sleep window. Each ring starts the day whole. Healthy phone activity lifts it, and the patterns that work against it wear it down, so a low Rest score means your phone was busy when you were meant to be asleep, not that you slept badly.

Why does watching something educational still affect my score?

Because Apple's Screen Time reports how long you spent in an app, not what you were doing inside it. A lecture and an hour of shorts look identical from the outside, and the same is true across the board: Facebook holds communities and learning, Instagram holds the people you actually know, YouTube holds repair guides and university courses. None of those apps expose the difference, so no app built on Screen Time can know it. Rather than pretend otherwise, ThirdLife shows you the shape of your activity and leaves the meaning to you. If a heavy day was heavy for a good reason, you are the only one who can say so. We give you the shape of your activity. What it meant is yours to judge.

What if I have App & Website Activity turned off?

ThirdLife needs it on. It is Apple's own setting, and with it off your phone records nothing for any app to read, including this one. You can turn it on in Settings, Screen Time, App & Website Activity. Turning it on does not send anything to us.

Can I see my child's phone from my phone?

Not in ThirdLife today. Apple can share some family Screen Time between devices, and we are exploring what a respectful parent view could look like. For now, ThirdLife is built around a different model: it is set up on your child's phone, they see their own rings, and you look at it together. That is a deliberate choice. A dashboard you check from another room changes the relationship; a screen you open together starts a conversation.

Do I need a watch?

For the phone side, no. Your scores, your reads, your milestones and your limits all work on the phone alone. Phone × Life is where a wearable matters. Sleep, workouts and time in daylight come from what your watch or ring records into Apple Health, so those findings need one. Steps come from the phone itself. Connect what you have, and ThirdLife works with it.

Which devices can I see?

Your iPhone, your iPad, or everything at once. Screen Time reports activity across the devices signed into your Apple ID, so ThirdLife can read all of them. There's a device picker at the top of the screen: look at one on its own, or switch to all devices for the full picture. If you work on an iPad and scroll on a phone, the combined view is the honest one.

Will this be available on iPad?

Yes, and it is close. The iPad version is largely built. What remains is store assets and the listing rather than engineering, so it should not be far away. In the meantime, your iPad's activity already appears in the iPhone app through the device picker, so nothing is missing from your scores.

When is the Android version coming?

We'd like to build one, and it's something we're planning for. There's no date to share yet, but if you want an Android version, tell us at info@thirdlifeapp.com and we'll count you.

What will it cost?

ThirdLife is free to use, with a paid tier for the deeper features. Seeing is free; acting is paid. Full details are on the pricing page.
